Targets of a Charge and Melee Attacks
- Must all intended targets of a melee attack be declared as targets of a charge?
The Verdict: No. A unit may declare a charge against one unit, then (following standard procedures and restrictions regarding base-to-base contact) make a Pile In move that makes another unit or units eligible to be targets of melee attacks. This is a departure from 9th Edition Fight Phase rules. During the Charge sequence, however, a unit must remain outside of Engagement Range of any models not declared as the target(s) of the initial Charge (CH, 29; CH, 33).
No rules documents seem to have addressed this issue; though frequently misunderstood in light of previous editions’ rules, it is clearly explained in the Core Rules.
