Frequently Asked Questions

Do you operate from a philosophy of Rules as Written (R.A.W.) or Rules as Intended (R.A.I.)?

Yes.

More helpfully, this website does not view these as mutually exclusive concepts: in other words, what an individual writes is generally regarded as representing intention.

Where reasonable and possible, this website adheres to “Rules as Written.” This is to say that if the rules are clearly written, and especially if some other, comparable rules reinforce the wording, rules will be interpreted as they actually are written. In many cases, this may seem to break the intention of the rules’ author (aka “Rules as Intended”). Unless the result is utterly outrageous, given that we do not have a psychic connection to the authors, we have only the printed texts as the authority on the authors’ meaning. (There have also been many cases over the past few editions where players were “certain” on a R.A.I. interpretation of a rule, only to have an FAQ establish that R.A.W. was indeed correct).

How do you prioritize rules in terms of sequencing?

Specific rules always trump general rules. Furthermore, more recent addenda supersede older documents.

How do you treat rules that vary across multiple languages?

Frequently rules are published in multiple languages. In almost all instances, these say exactly the same things. However, in an instance where an otherwise unclarified rule may have some light shone in its direction by an alternative language printing, this will be mentioned and utilized where possible.

How can I contribute?

It’s super awesome to hear that the site helps players. I’m very glad you like it. You can help in a number of ways!

  1. Submit rules that you find questionable, frequently-misplayed abilities, and so on here: Submission Form.
  2. Submit interpretations (citing your sources) for rules that either aren’t listed or for which you have an alternate interpretation.
  3. Share this website with your fellow players, communities, and tournament organisers.
  4. Running the site will take a lot of time and that ever-present thing called “money.” If you want to help support the site, you can chip in a bit of coffee or even hit up our Patreon. This is intended as a public service website and not a hyper-elite, patron-only endeavour, so please know that every pound, dollar, Euro, or currency of your choice goes an incredibly long way. Another expensive aspect is purchasing and keeping up with codex releases, so if you are interested in donating a digital code, please let me know via lawyerofrules@gmail.com .
  5. If you are somebody who represents advertisers or potential sponsors, just get in touch via lawyerofrules@gmail.com to discuss cool collaborations!
  6. I can paint miniatures, but I can’t make digital art that isn’t hilariously bad. If you want to volunteer to produce some graphics, Lawyer of Rules would be forever in your debt!
